Create a source map privately
List each device, disk, account export and folder that may contain important photos. Give each a neutral source label, approximate date range, current accessibility and the person who can authorize its use. Keep this inventory in your own records, not in our website. Include known missing or inaccessible sources rather than treating the visible laptop folder as complete.
Do not merge on discovery
Copying everything into one destination immediately can obscure where a file came from and overwrite equal names. Preserve a separate intake area for each source until it has been checked. Note whether a source holds originals, edited copies, thumbnails or an unknown mixture. An organized uncertainty is safer than a confident but unexplained merge.
Prioritize the irreplaceable
Begin with the small set you most care about, particularly files on aging or unreliable media. If a device behaves abnormally, avoid repeated destructive experiments; specialist recovery may be needed. This guide is an organization workflow, not hardware recovery advice. A source that cannot be read remains an explicit exception.

The map containsPhoneA,OldLaptop,ScanDisk andSharedAlbum. OldLaptop has an unknown date range and SharedAlbum may contain reduced copies. The first task is to preserve readable sources independently, then compare representative files. Mark the scan disk as a distinct source even if its images appear in the album. The final master should retain enough provenance to explain later where an uncertain date or duplicate originated.
A useful inventory row
Use fields for source label, accessible now, approximate scope, original-or-derivative status and next action. Unknown is a valid value. Keep physical locations and personal names in your own secure record rather than this publication. The row is ready when another authorized helper could identify the source and understand why it has not yet been merged, without needing to guess what a blank field means.
