Separate exact copies from similar images
Two images may look identical while differing in resolution, crop, metadata or provenance. A burst sequence may contain a subtly better expression. An exact duplicate can still be the only independent copy in another location. Decide whether you are reducing repeated files inside a master set or accidentally reducing the number of protected copies.
Use a quarantine stage
Move suspected duplicates only within a copied working set or mark them for review without deleting. Keep a record of the reason and retained counterpart. Do not empty a cloud trash area as part of the first cleanup. A temporary quarantine is useful only if it is clearly labelled and the accepted master remains independently protected.
Check the matching rule
If you use a local comparison tool, understand whether it compares bytes, names, dimensions or visual similarity. Each answers a different question. A matching filename is weak evidence; a byte match shows identical file content but does not decide where you should keep recovery copies. This site performs no duplicate detection and requests no photo uploads.
A fictional decision
A scan appears as TIFF and JPEG. They show the same subject but are not interchangeable duplicates. Retain the source scan and the convenient viewing copy with distinct roles. Two byte-identicalJPEGs inside the same accepted folder may be redundant, but a matching JPEG on a separately stored backup disk serves a protection role. Do not count it as clutter simply because its content matches.
Write the retention reason
For a proposed removal, record the retained counterpart and why the discarded item adds no distinct source, edit or protection role. If you cannot name the counterpart, pause the removal. Keep an independent reference copy through the review period. This small discipline helps distinguish redundant files inside one collection from deliberately repeated files that make the collection recoverable after a different kind of failure.
