Avoid an irreversible cleanup
Renaming thousands of files may break a private index or make it harder to compare against an old copy. Begin with a small copied batch and preserve the old-to-new mapping. If the existing camera name is useful, keep it inside the new name instead of discarding it. Never rename the only surviving set as a first experiment.
Keep names portable
Short descriptive components and a consistent date convention are easier to read than elaborate punctuation. Do not encode sensitive personal details into a filename that will be publicly shared. A name can describe an event without identifying every person. Keep more detailed context in your private notes when appropriate.
Equal names deserve attention
pCloud’s upload help warns that different content with the same name can overwrite an existing destination file in its described upload workflow. Keep source batches separate and resolve collisions deliberately. Do not assume the service will always create a helpful numbered duplicate or that a previous version will remain recoverable forever.
A fictional rename check
Two cameras both produced IMG0001.JPG. Keep them in Source A and Source B while comparing dates and content. If renamed, preserve each source identifier in the mapping. Download a small accepted batch and confirm names are still understandable outside the gallery. The goal is reliable identification, not making every filename tell an entire family story.
Keep a collision record
Before merging two sources, identify equal names that refer to different content. Record the retained source label and intended destination for each collision. Resolve these in a copied batch before applying the scheme more widely. If a rename changes an external reference or private catalogue, update that relationship deliberately. A filename cleanup is not complete when names look consistent but their links to source evidence have disappeared.
